Cox Automotive dropped its new AI in Auto Retail Tracker last week, and the numbers should make every GM sit up. While 82% of dealers report using AI, many have yet to align with how consumers are shopping, particularly in vehicle search, where disruption is well underway. Even worse for the "we're doing fine" crowd: 63 per cent of shoppers plan to use AI for their next vehicle purchase, but only 29 per cent of dealers have begun adjusting to AIโpowered search.

Impel says the real AI breakthrough isn't another point solution โ it's connecting what you already have. Dealers have spent more than 30 years investing in technology to change how their stores operate, but the real breakthrough is happening now, with AI, connecting all the tools dealers already use. "Dealership-native" AI is becoming the new buzzphrase โ and there's a real point buried in it. Dealership-native AI is grounded in years of industry experience and a deep understanding of how stores actually operate, the argument goes, versus generic chatbots that don't know your market. Could AI accelerate dealership consolidation? Car Dealership Guy's team is floating the idea that AI adoption could accelerate consolidation across dealership networks โ worth a watch if you're thinking about buy-sell timing. DealerRefresh forum is (still) arguing about whether AI BDC tools are real or just ChatGPT in a trench coat. One dealer-side commenter didn't hold back: most of them are wrappers, stitching together ChatGPT, a CRM API, and a voice vendor and calling it an AI BDC platform. Consumers using AI aren't trying to ditch the dealership โ they just want to show up smarter. Per Cox's tracker breakdown, consumers are not using AI to avoid dealerships โ avoiding dealer interactions ranked among the least-cited reasons for using AI, and instead shoppers report using AI to research vehicles, generate questions, and arrive better prepared for conversations with dealership staff. LotGPT (by Lotlinx) โ it's the only chatbot built exclusively for car dealers, knows your market, dealership and inventory, and is fueled by Lotlinx's decades of VIN and shopper data plus your live inventory, Google Analytics and CRM to deliver relevant answers and guidance. Price: LotGPT is free for dealers, but invite-only โ so no publicly listed price beyond that. Who it's for: Dealers and GMs who want a ChatGPT-style assistant that actually understands VINs, aging inventory, and competitive pricing instead of generic web answers.
๐ Stat of the Day
63 per cent of shoppers plan to use AI for their next vehicle purchase, but only 29 per cent of dealers have begun adjusting to AIโpowered search. โ Cox Automotive AI in Auto Retail Tracker, published August 11, 2026 (primary source: coxautoinc.com press release). This is a primary source from Cox's own survey of 500+ dealers and 1,500+ consumers per quarter, so it's solid โ just note it's self-reported survey data, not third-party audited numbers.
๐ฎ Trend Watch
The story isn't "AI adoption" anymore โ everybody's past that. The real fault line emerging this week is measurement and readiness, not adoption: Cox's tracker shows dealers piling into AI tools without a clear way to see what it's delivering, while shoppers are quietly out-pacing dealers on the search side of the equation. At the same time, the "dealership-native AI" framing (CBT News, Impel) signals vendors are pivoting their pitch from "we have AI" to "our AI actually knows dealerships" โ expect that to be the dominant sales pitch through Q4. And the DealerRefresh forum grumbling about "AI BDC wrapper" products suggests a shakeout is coming: dealers are getting sharper about telling real agentic tools from repackaged chatbots, which lines up with earlier reporting that 2026 is shaping up to be a consolidation year for dealer tech stacks.
