At the AutoIndustry.AI 2026 Summit keynote, AI agents mystery-shopped 100 car dealerships live in front of a room full of dealers. The agents captured 160+ data points per interaction. The results: 92 dealers replied within 24 hours, 62 sent some price info, and only 33 provided a full, requested out-the-door price. Average response time: about an hour.

💡 Tool Spotlight

DealerOn Sidekick (announced May 5, 2026)

Four-module AI suite bolted onto DealerOn websites:

  1. Quick Connect Chat Sidekick. Natural-language answers on inventory, appointments, trade values, recalls, hours. Sub-three-second responses.
  2. Merchandising Sidekick. Scores and auto-enhances dealer photos (lighting, framing, clean backgrounds).
  3. Compliance Sidekick. Tracks OEM brand guideline violations across pages.
  4. Insights Sidekick. Natural-language queries against the DealerOn Data Hub (Google Analytics 360 + BigQuery).

Price: Not published. Limited beta only. Demo gated at dealeron.com/sidekick. Who it's for: Stores already on DealerOn that want AI integrated into the website layer instead of bolting on a third-party chatbot. Less relevant if you are on Dealer.com or a custom platform.

🔮 Trend Watch

Three patterns are converging this week, and they all point the same direction.

First, AI is moving from "feature you buy" to "scoreboard you live on." The AutoIndustry.AI mystery shop is the leading edge: when an AI can shop 100 stores in an afternoon and publish the results, "lead response" stops being an internal KPI and becomes a public reputation event. Expect more of these audits, and expect them to leak.

Second, OEMs are routing around the dealer. GM's Gemini rollout is a 4-million-vehicle move that needed zero dealer involvement. The car is becoming a direct OEM-to-consumer channel. Service messaging, navigation, even commerce will increasingly originate in the dash, not the store.

Third, the platform players are consolidating the AI layer. DealerOn Sidekick, Tekion's T1, Fullpath's CDP, and Solera's cloud platform are all selling the same pitch: one unified AI surface, not a bolt-on chatbot. The bolt-on era is closing. The dealers who win the next 18 months will be the ones who pick a platform and commit, instead of stacking ten point solutions.

Bottom line for a GM forwarding this to the team: fix lead response this quarter, before an AI mystery shop puts your store name on someone's keynote slide.

Reading about AI won't train your team

The stores pulling ahead aren't the ones with the most tools — they're the ones whose people know how to use them. That takes a strategy, a readiness baseline, and real training.
