Note from the research assistant: I packaged what I could verify from public sources. Where a story has a specific date, I cited it. Where I am summarizing a broader trend article, I flagged it as such. I did not fabricate stats. Anything labeled as a number came from a named report or vendor press release, with the URL.

GM pushes Google Gemini to 4 million vehicles over the air, with no dealer in the loop
GM announced on April 28 that it is rolling out Google Gemini conversational AI as a free over-the-air update to roughly 4 million Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles from model year 2022 forward. CBT News framed the headline bluntly: the upgrade lands in the customer's car with no dealer involvement, no service appointment, and no upsell opportunity.

💡 Tool Spotlight
AutoRaptor AI Voice Agent
- What it does: Answers inbound calls 24 by 7, qualifies buyers, captures lead data, and books appointments inside the AutoRaptor CRM. Pitched as a fix for the "we missed the call" leak that costs independents real units every month.
- Who it is for: Independent and used car dealers already on AutoRaptor CRM, plus stores tired of paying a BDC for after hours coverage.
- Approximate price: Not disclosed publicly in the launch coverage. Comparable AI BDC voice products in the market range roughly from $300 to $1,000+ per month per rooftop, per CBT News and DriveCentric coverage of the category. Confirm directly with AutoRaptor before quoting a number to a client.
- Why I am flagging it: Independents are usually the last to get serious AI voice. When the CRMs they already pay for start bundling it, the ground shifts fast. If you sell to franchise stores, expect your independent competitors to start answering the phone as well as you do, sometimes better.

🔮 Trend Watch
Three patterns showed up across today's reads, and they reinforce each other:
- AI is moving from the website to the operating system. A year ago AI was a chat bubble. Today, per Digital Dealer and Automotive News, vendors are pitching AI as the default operating layer across sales, service, voice, and pricing. The dealers winning are not the ones with the most AI tools. They are the ones with one connected system measured on revenue, not impressions.
- The OEM and the platform are starting to talk to your customer without you. GM with Gemini in the car. CarMax inside ChatGPT. OpenAI rumored to be moving toward conversation-based ads. Three different surfaces, same pattern: the customer is having an AI conversation about a vehicle and the franchise dealer is not in the room. Owning the AI conversation in your local market is the new owning the GMB profile.
- Voice is the new battleground, and 2026 is the deployment year. Spyne's 74% number on voice agents lines up with the AutoRaptor launch and with Numa, Toma, and Pam continuing to push hard. By Q4, "we have AI voice" will sound like "we have a website" sounded in 2008. Either you have a good one, or you are explaining why you do not.
