On February 27, CarMax became the first U.S. auto retailer to launch a native app inside the ChatGPT App Store. Customers can now shop CarMax's live inventory using plain-language prompts ("an SUV with a third row under $25,000"), get instant vehicle valuations, and get a direct path to CarMax's online offer tool -- all without leaving ChatGPT. This is not a chatbot integration. This is CarMax planting a flag inside the most-used AI platform on the planet.

Tool Spotlight
Keyloop Kara AI
What it does: Kara is an AI-powered support assistant built directly into Keyloop's dealer management and retail platform ecosystem. It runs on Salesforce's Agentforce platform and handles dealer support requests, advanced troubleshooting, and proactive predictive recommendations. Think of it as an always-on technical support agent for your DMS -- no hold music, no ticket queue.
Who it's for: Dealers already running Keyloop's Fusion Automotive Retail Platform or Keyloop DMS.
Price: Not publicly disclosed -- part of the Keyloop platform subscription.
Why it matters: This is a real signal. The major platform vendors are not just adding AI chatbots. They are building AI agents that live inside core dealership infrastructure. If your DMS vendor hasn't talked to you about their AI roadmap yet, ask them directly.
Stat of the Day
30% of vehicle buyers used AI tools during their research process in 2026 -- and 68.4% of those buyers used ChatGPT specifically.
Meanwhile, only 37% of dealers believe AI will be important to their operations. That gap is the opportunity. Buyers are already using AI to research. Most dealers are not yet showing up in those conversations.

Trend Watch
Three patterns are converging right now and dealers need to see this clearly.
First, AI is moving from the marketing stack into the operating system. The DMS vendors, not just the lead tools, are now baking AI into the core of how stores run. This is not optional add-on territory anymore.
Second, the car-buying conversation is migrating into AI platforms. CarMax in ChatGPT is not a PR stunt. It is a distribution strategy. As AI assistants become the first stop for consumer research, having inventory and offers available inside those platforms becomes the equivalent of having a Google listing in 2012.
Third, the consumer-dealer AI gap is a ticking clock. Buyers are already using AI. Most dealers have not caught up. Early data shows early adopters are converting 26% more appointments and cutting BDC costs by up to 33%. The stores that close this gap first will pull away from competitors who are still debating whether AI is worth it.
The dealers who treat 2026 as a year to watch will spend 2027 trying to catch up to the ones who moved.
