🔥 The AI Drop
LaFontaine Automotive Group just gave away the best lead-gen tool a service drive has seen since the postcard died — and called it "complimentary."
Forty-plus Michigan rooftops. One UVeye scanner network. Zero dollars charged to the customer, and it doesn't matter where they bought the car. Any driver, any brand, any dealership. Read that again: any driver, any brand. That's not a courtesy inspection. That's a funnel built to pull every used car in the state through LaFontaine's service bay and trade-appraisal process before a competitor ever lays eyes on it.
Here's the number that should stick with you: UVeye already has more than 1,000 systems deployed globally and scans over 3 million vehicles a month. That's not a pilot program somebody's testing on a spreadsheet. That's infrastructure, running today, at a scale most dealer groups couldn't build in five years.
The twist is what happens after the scan prints. A computer-vision report that flags a worn tire or a leaking seal is worth exactly nothing if it sits on a printer tray. And here's the part the press release won't say out loud: "free" only pays for itself if somebody works the lead inside 24 hours. Otherwise you didn't build a funnel — you built a very expensive way to hand a stranger a diagnosis and let him drive to whoever calls him first.
This is the same failure mode as the used-car manager who never tracked what turned versus what sat on the lot. The tool isn't the problem. The absence of a process behind the tool is the problem. A flashlight-and-fifteen-minutes multi-point inspection at least had a human attached to it who might mention the brake job at the counter. A drive-through scan with no BDC follow-up is just a fancier way to generate data nobody reads.
The opinion only this newsletter will print: LaFontaine didn't build a marketing gimmick. They built a fixed-ops acquisition machine, and most dealers reading about it this week will copy the hardware and skip the plumbing — because the hardware is the fun part and the follow-up process is the boring part. Boring is where the money is.
Forward this to your service director and your BDC manager today. In your next manager meeting, ask one question: "If a walk-in got a free scan tomorrow, whose desk does that lead land on, and how fast?" If the answer is "I don't know," you don't have a marketing program. You have a demo.

📋 Prompt of the Week
Turns a free-scan or trade-appraisal report into a follow-up call script your BDC can run inside 24 hours — no vendor required.
You are a BDC scripting assistant for a franchise dealership.
A customer just received a free AI vehicle health scan showing the
following flagged items: [LIST FLAGGED ITEMS FROM SCAN REPORT].
Write a 3-touch follow-up sequence (call script + SMS + email) for
a service advisor to use within 24 hours of the scan. Each touch
should:
- Reference the specific finding, not a generic "we noticed issues"
- Offer one clear next step (appointment time, not "call us back")
- Include one line that translates the finding into a real risk or
cost if ignored (use plain language, not shop jargon)
Store name: [DEALERSHIP NAME]
Service hours: [HOURS]
Tone: direct, no scare tactics, no upsell language
Why it works: it forces the follow-up to exist as a concrete, timed sequence instead of a vague "we'll reach out" — which is the exact gap that turns a free scan from a lead into a wasted printout.
🛠️ Tool of the Week + ⚡ Three Fast Finds
Tool of the Week: UVeye — the scanner behind LaFontaine's 40-store rollout. Drive-through lanes use computer vision to read tires, undercarriage, and exterior in seconds, flagging defects without a tech crawling under the car. UVeye claims 96% accuracy — that's the vendor's own number, unverified by a third party, so don't put it in a customer-facing pitch without a hedge. Pricing is not publicly listed; verify at uveye.com before you buy. Run it right: pair the scanner with a written BDC handoff protocol on day one, not month three — the hardware doesn't sell the car, your follow-up does. Not for: single-point rooftops without the service or BDC bandwidth to actually work the leads a scan generates. Buying the bay hardware without staffing the follow-up is buying a very expensive printer.
⚡ Three Fast Finds — not endorsements, just on the radar:
- LotGPT (Lotlinx) — free, invite-only chatbot that flags aging VINs and competitive pricing off your own inventory and CRM data. Verify access at lotlinx.com.
- WarrCloud — automates manufacturer warranty claims processing for fixed ops; nearly 1,000 dealership customers and a 2025 PACE Award. Pricing not public — verify at WarrCloud.com.
- SimpSocial's Sarah AI — now plugged directly into VinSolutions for agentic lead follow-up; ask who owns the transcript before you sign anything.

📊 The Number
22%. Among dealers using AI, 69% expected it to drive sales and revenue growth — but only 22% say they've actually seen that happen, per Cox Automotive's AI in Auto Retail Tracker, August 11, 2026. Plain dealer math: seven out of ten dealers expected a payoff. A little more than two out of ten can point to one.
Do this math on your own store: pull whatever AI tool you signed up for in the last 12 months and ask your controller for one number — incremental gross, incremental units, or incremental appointments attributable to it. If nobody can produce that number by Friday, you're the 78% waiting on a payoff that isn't coming.
❓ Ask the AI Guy
"My BDC director wants to route after-hours leads to an AI voice agent, but our sales team says they don't trust bots with customers. Who's right?"
Neither, and that's the point — trust isn't the problem you're solving. Measurement is. Dealers say they trust their own sales team over AI 57% to 14%, but that same research shows most dealers can't even tell you when a human rep loses track of a lead. You don't have an AI trust problem. You have a visibility problem that existed before the bot showed up, and the bot just made it visible.
Before you route a single lead to a voice agent, do this:
- Pull your current lead-defection rate — how many leads go cold with no human note on why, for the last 90 days.
- Time-stamp your after-hours response gap — actual minutes between a lead landing and a human touching it, not your BDC's stated policy.
- Pick one metric, not five — appointments set and shown, not "engagement" or "response rate."
- Run the AI agent on overflow only for 30 days — the calls your team is already missing, not the ones they're already closing.
- Compare show rate, not sentiment — if the bot's booked appointments show up at the same rate as your team's, you have your answer. If they don't, you also have your answer.
Do This Monday
Walk into your service manager's office and ask one question: "If a walk-in got a free vehicle scan today, whose desk does that lead land on, and how fast?" If there's no name and no time attached to the answer, build the handoff before you build — or buy — anything else this quarter.
