๐ฅ The AI Drop
Your website was built for a human with two thumbs and a credit card. It's about to get tested by a robot with neither โ and a shopper's trust riding on the outcome.
Cox Automotive's Auto AI Readiness in Auto Retail Study โ three phases fielded between April and August of 2025, 537 franchised dealers โ found that 52% of them use AI to engage customers 24/7 through real-time text, chat, or email. Restate that in plain English: just over half of stores have something answering the phone and the inbox around the clock. That also means nearly half don't. Half your competitive set is still letting leads sit until Monday morning while the other half never sleeps.
Here's the twist that makes this week's news matter more than a routine adoption stat. A CBT News column running all week โ tied to CarJiffy, so read the diagnosis straight and the cure as a pitch โ argues dealers have been fighting the wrong war. Everyone optimized for AI-assisted shopping: helping a chatbot build a shortlist, rank your inventory, summarize your reviews. The real shift is AI-assisted buying โ a shopper's own AI agent showing up on your VDP trying to actually move the transaction forward. Not window-shopping. Filling out the credit app. Locking a trade value. Reserving the VIN.
Most "digital retailing" tools were never built for that. They were built assuming a human who scrolls and clicks and eventually calls your BDC when confused. An AI agent doesn't get confused โ it just leaves. If your site dead-ends into a lead form, a phone call during business hours, or a "someone will reach out tomorrow," the AI-assisted buyer routes around you to the rooftop that doesn't make it wait. You don't lose the lead. You lose the deal before your BDC ever knows it existed.
Here's the part nobody wants to hear: having a chatbot is not the same test as passing this one. The 52% number measures whether you answer. It says nothing about whether what you're sending back is structured well enough for another machine to act on it โ real pricing, real trade values, a clean handoff. That's the same blind spot as a used-car manager who can tell you forty units turned last month but can't tell you what they turned for. Activity isn't the metric. Outcome is.
Forward this to your GM this week. And in your next manager meeting, ask one question: "Has anyone actually tried to buy a car from our own website using an AI agent instead of a human โ and where exactly did it get stuck?" If nobody in the room can answer that, you don't have digital retailing. You have a wall with a chat widget bolted to it.

๐ Prompt of the Week
Run this against your own site to find the dead end before an AI-assisted shopper does.
Act as an AI shopping agent working on behalf of a real buyer.
Go to [YOUR DEALERSHIP WEBSITE URL] and attempt to:
1. Find a [YEAR/MAKE/MODEL] with [MILEAGE OR TRIM DETAIL]
2. Get a real price and any current incentives
3. Submit a trade-in value estimate for a [YEAR/MAKE/MODEL] with [MILEAGE]
4. Move toward reserving the vehicle or starting a credit application
Report back exactly where you got stuck, what forced you to stop
and wait for a human, and whether the information you found was
specific enough to act on or too vague to trust.
Why it works: it forces a plain-language readout of the exact dead end โ form, phone gate, or vague pricing โ that's costing you deals your BDC never sees, in language you can hand straight to your web vendor.
๐ ๏ธ Tool of the Week + โก Three Fast Finds
Tool of the Week: VinSolutions Virtual Contact Assistant (Cox Automotive) โ a CRM-embedded AI assistant that nurtures leads, schedules appointments, and answers shopper questions 24/7, handing off to a human the moment one's needed. The pitch is that it's built into the CRM you're likely already paying for, not another bolt-on point solution. Pricing is not publicly listed โ it ships inside the VinSolutions platform, so the real move is asking your Cox rep what it adds to your monthly bill before you get excited. Gut check: you're not buying new software, you're buying a line-item increase on an invoice you already sign โ find out the number before the demo, not after. Run it through the Prompt of the Week above once it's live: does the handoff actually pass structured, usable info, or does it just sound confident? Not for: any store not already in the Cox Automotive ecosystem โ you'd be buying a whole new CRM for one feature, and that math rarely pencils.

๐ The Number
52%.
That's the share of 537 franchised dealers in Cox Automotive's Auto AI Readiness Study who say AI is engaging customers 24/7 via real-time text, chat, or email. Flip it: 48% of stores have no machine covering the overnight and weekend gap at all. Every hour your team is off the clock, roughly half the industry is invisible to a shopper โ and to that shopper's AI agent.
Do this math on your own store: pull your after-hours lead volume for the last 30 days and check how many got a real, specific answer versus a "we'll follow up" auto-reply. That's your actual number, not Cox's survey average.
โ Ask the AI Guy
"Should we just buy an AI BDC tool and be done with it?"
Not yet โ you're solving the wrong problem first. The tool doesn't matter until you know your own numbers.
- Pull your current lead-response time โ not your policy, your actual average, measured.
- Check what percentage of after-hours inquiries get a specific, usable answer versus a generic hold message.
- Test your own website with an AI agent (see the Prompt of the Week) and find where it dead-ends.
- Only then shop vendors โ and ask each one to show, in your data, what changes on those three numbers, not their case study from someone else's rooftop.
Do This Monday
Open a new chat with any AI assistant, paste in the Prompt of the Week with your dealership's URL and a real vehicle, and watch where it gets stuck. Bring that dead end โ screenshot and all โ to your next manager meeting before you take another vendor demo.
