🔥 The AI Drop

Every single day this week, from four different sources, the same story kept showing up wearing a different outfit: AI adoption is no longer the dividing line in dealer retail — connection is.

Spyne's latest Auto Retail Intelligence Quarterly (out this week) put the sharpest number on it: by 2027, dealers who embed AI into connected systems linking customers, vehicles, and deals will outpace stores running isolated point tools. Car Dealership Guy's news arm ran a version of the same argument mid-week. Automotive News' guest commentary said clean, connected data is the new dealer edge. Even the Lotlinx "AI Gap" survey backs it up from the other direction — 84% of dealers say generic AI tools fail to deliver useful results, because a chatbot with no connection to your inventory or CRM is just a fancy guessing machine.

Here's why this matters more than another vendor press release deserves to: nearly everybody now "has AI." Your chatbot, your BDC texting tool, your service scheduler — they all probably have some AI sticker on them. That's not the flex anymore. The flex is whether your chatbot knows what's actually in your inventory, whether your service scheduler feeds your CRM, and whether a hot lead in one system triggers action in another. Dealers stitching those systems together are starting to pull away — not because their AI is smarter, but because it isn't working blind.

The uncomfortable truth buried in this week's reporting: a lot of dealers bought AI the same way they bought a CRM add-on in 2015 — one point solution at a time, from whoever showed up with a good demo. That approach is exactly what's creating the gap Spyne is measuring.

What a GM should do about it: Stop asking "do we have AI?" Start asking "does our AI actually see the same customer, the same vehicle, and the same deal our team sees?" If the answer is no, you don't have an AI strategy — you have a collection of subscriptions.

🛠️ Tool of the Week

inride — Trade Agent AI

Instead of chasing third-party leads, Trade Agent AI mines a dealer's own customer database for people statistically ready to trade in, then runs the entire outreach — SMS, email, appraisal, appointment booking — with zero BDC staff touching it. It's an agentic play on trade acquisition, aimed squarely at stores hemorrhaging margin to the auction lane.

Who it's for: Dealers moving 150+ units a month who are buying more than 30% of used inventory at auction instead of sourcing it from their own database.

Price: Not publicly listed.

📊 The Numbers

🔮 What's Coming

The industry is splitting into two camps, and this week's reporting made both sides visible. Camp one is bolting point-solution chatbots onto an already-messy stack and wondering why ROI hasn't shown up. Camp two — Group1 and the other big public groups, Jeff Wyler, BMW of Reading's Kevin Pitts — is re-platforming, connecting CRM, DMS, inventory, and F&I so AI can act across the whole customer journey, or building their own tools to dodge "vendor bloat." Meanwhile compliance is quietly becoming the industry's next headache, as regulators catch up to bots that talk on the dealership's behalf. And on the demand side, ChatGPT is fast becoming the shopper's actual front door — 68.4% of AI-assisted vehicle research now runs through it — which means showing up well inside an AI answer is starting to matter as much as SEO ever did.

✅ Do This Monday

Pull a list of every AI tool currently running in your store — website chat, BDC texting, service scheduler, F&I assistant, whatever it is. For each one, answer one question: does it read from or write to your CRM/DMS? Anything that answers "no" is a silo, not a system — and it's exactly the kind of tool the Spyne and Lotlinx data says is quietly costing you deals.

Reading about AI won't train your team

The stores pulling ahead aren't the ones with the most tools — they're the ones whose people know how to use them. That takes a strategy, a readiness baseline, and real training.
