The AI Drop
Your dealership has a new front door. And right now, you don't know what it looks like.
Last week, DealerOn launched a tool called OnPrompt. On the surface, it's a piece of software that tracks how your store shows up inside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Boring vendor news, right?
Wrong. This launch is the moment the biggest website vendor in the dealer business officially admitted what I've been telling clients for a year and a half: your website is no longer the front door. The AI chatbot is.
Here is the number that should make every dealer principal spit out their coffee. According to a Cars.com study released this spring, 19 percent of all vehicle buyers and 25 percent of new car buyers now use ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews when shopping. AI is now ahead of marketplaces (12.7 percent) as a shopping research tool. Among buyers who use AI, 97 percent say it will impact their purchase decision.
Read that again. One in four new car buyers is asking a robot for advice before they ever hit your VDP. And that robot has an opinion about your store. It might be a great opinion. It might be a brutal one. It might be no opinion at all, which is worse, because then you don't exist.
Here is the part that hurts. Most dealers cannot answer this simple question: "What does ChatGPT say when someone asks for the best Buick dealer in my town?" Try it right now. Open ChatGPT on your phone. Type that exact sentence with your brand and your city. If your store is not the first name mentioned, you are losing deals you will never see on a CRM report. No lead form. No phone call. The buyer just drove past you on the way to your competitor.
This is not a future problem. A 3-store group in the Southeast ran the test last month and discovered the AI was recommending a competitor's store 4 out of 5 times, including for searches that named their own brand. They had no idea. Their GA4 looked fine. Their PPC was humming. They were just slowly bleeding ups they couldn't measure.
Take a stance with me: by Q4 of this year, dealers who haven't audited their AI visibility will be where dealers without a Google My Business listing were in 2014. Invisible. Cheap to fix today. Catastrophic to ignore.
Forward this section to your GM. Then go run the ChatGPT test before lunch.
Tool of the Week
Perplexity AI ($20/month) — the cheapest AI visibility audit on the planet
You do not need to buy enterprise software to start fixing this. You need 30 minutes and a Perplexity Pro account.
Here is exactly what to do at your store this week:
Step 1. Sign up for Perplexity Pro at perplexity.ai. Twenty bucks a month. Use a personal credit card, you'll get reimbursed.
Step 2. Run these five prompts, one by one. Replace the brackets with your real info:
- "What is the best [your brand] dealer near [your city]?"
- "Where should I buy a [popular model you stock] in [your metro area]?"
- "Which dealership has the best service department for [your brand] in [your city]?"
- "Best dealer for first-time car buyers in [your city]"
- "Most trusted [your brand] dealer in [your state]"
Step 3. For each answer, screenshot the result. Note three things: (1) Is your store mentioned? (2) Which competitors are mentioned? (3) What sources did Perplexity cite to make its recommendation? Click those source links.
Step 4. Repeat the exact same prompts in ChatGPT and in Google's AI Overview. The answers will be different. That's the point.
Step 5. Take the source URLs Perplexity cited and ask yourself: do I have content on my website that looks like this? Almost always the answer is no. That's your content gap.
Best for: every franchise dealer in the country. Especially dealers in competitive metros where one or two stores dominate the search results. If you are a Tier 3 dealer being outranked by a competitor with worse inventory, this is how you start clawing back.
Total time: 30 minutes. Total cost: $20. Total potential: every shopper who asks AI a question between now and the end of the year.
The Numbers
74 percent.
That's the share of dealership executives naming AI voice agents as their top investment priority for 2026, per BDC.AI's industry research. Voice agents — the AI bots that answer your phones — are now beating CRM upgrades, website redesigns, and digital retailing tools as the number-one budget priority.
Why? Because the math is brutal. One mid-size Honda group in the Midwest deployed a voice agent for service calls. Answer rate before: 78 percent during hours, under 10 percent after hours. Payback period after deployment: under six weeks. Show me another tech investment that pays for itself before the first oil change comes due.

Heard on the Lot
A General Manager at a 4-store domestic group in Texas told me: "We canceled our SEO contract three months ago and shifted the budget to AI visibility. Our SEO guy lost his mind. Our floor traffic is up 12 percent. I don't know if it's correlated, but I'm not putting the money back."
A fixed ops director at a luxury import store in the Northeast told me: "My BDC manager fought me on the voice AI for six months. We rolled it out anyway. She came in last Monday and asked me to expand it to sales. Same woman."
A dealer principal at a mid-size CDJR store in the Mountain West said: "I asked ChatGPT what the best Jeep dealer in my city was last weekend. It named my competitor. Then it named my competitor's competitor. Then it named a guy who closed two years ago. I am not on the list. I am writing you on a Sunday because I cannot sleep."
You are not alone, brother. Half the dealers in America are in the same boat. The other half just don't know it yet.
Ask the AI Guy
Q: I keep hearing about AI but every vendor is selling me something different. Where do I actually start without lighting $50K on fire?
Start with three things, in this order. One: audit what AI says about your store. Use the Perplexity exercise above. This costs you $20 and an afternoon. It tells you if you have a problem worth solving.
Two: fix your phone before you fix anything else. If you are missing more than 15 percent of inbound calls during business hours, or if your after-hours coverage is a voicemail, plug that hole first. Voice AI vendors will pilot you for $1,500 to $3,000 a month. The payback is measured in weeks, not quarters. This is the single highest-ROI AI move in retail automotive right now.
Three: do not buy a "platform." Buy point solutions that solve one problem and integrate with what you already have. Anyone selling you a $15K-a-month "AI operating system" in 2026 is selling you their roadmap, not their product. Wait nine months. Buy the proven version for half the price.
That's it. Audit. Phones. Patience. The dealers winning at AI right now are the ones who picked three battles and won them. Not the ones who bought everything at NADA.

Reading about AI won't train your team
The stores pulling ahead aren't the ones with the most tools — they're the ones whose people know how to use them. That takes a strategy, a readiness baseline, and real training.
