🔥 The AI Drop
Your next up walked in with a negotiation coach in their pocket. And it knows more about your deal than your green pea.
Here is the number that should stop you cold. A fresh 2026 study found that 44% of car buyers who use AI are now using it to build a negotiation strategy before they ever set foot on your lot. Not to compare cup holders. To beat you. They are asking ChatGPT what your real cost is, what a fair price looks like in their zip code, and exactly what to say when your closer starts the dance.
Some of them are snapping a photo of your contract in the box and feeding it straight into AI to check if you slipped anything in.
I want you to sit with that. The information advantage that ran the car business for 100 years is gone. It did not erode. It collapsed. Thirty percent of buyers now use generative AI to research a vehicle and a dealership, and the ones who do show up earlier, more confident, and harder to push around.
Here is my stance, and some of you will not like it. This is the best thing that has happened to good dealers in a decade.
Think about it. The dealer who survived on confusion, on the four-square shuffle, on hoping the customer did not know the money factor, that dealer is cooked. But the dealer who runs a clean store, prices straight, and trains people to build value instead of building fog, that dealer just got handed a market full of pre-qualified, high-intent buyers who already did half the selling for you.
The AI buyer is not your enemy. The AI buyer is a filter. They knock out the time-wasters and show up ready to transact. Your job is to stop fighting the customer's information and start matching it. If a shopper quotes a number from ChatGPT, do not flinch. Walk them through why your number is what it is. Transparency is now a closing tool, not a threat.
The stores that win the rest of 2026 are the ones that decide, this week, to be the most honest building in their market. Because honesty is the one thing the customer's AI cannot accuse you of faking.
Forward this to your GM. Then ask them one question: if every customer this weekend knew our invoice cost, would our process still work?
💡 Tool of the Week
AI voice agents for your phones (STELLA, Toma, Numa, and the like)
Here is the ugliest stat in the building: roughly 33% of calls to a dealership get missed, and 71% of dealers say missed calls are their single biggest phone problem. The bill for that? Studies peg lost service revenue between $850,000 and $1.17 million a year. Per store. That is gross walking straight out the door because nobody picked up.
An AI voice agent answers every call, day or night, in English and Spanish, and books the appointment right into your scheduler. One Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram store tracking its AI-handled calls booked 80% of them into appointments. A good human BDC books 30 to 40%. That is not a small lift. That is double.
Here is exactly how to roll it out at your store:
- Pick one phone tree to start. Service is the easiest win because the calls are repetitive (hours, status, scheduling) and the revenue is measurable.
- Forward your service overflow and after-hours line to the AI agent first. Do not rip out your team. Let the AI catch what was already hitting voicemail.
- Connect it to your scheduler (Xtime, Tekion, whatever you run) so it books live, not "someone will call you back."
- Pull the call recordings after week one. Listen to 10 of them yourself. Tune the script.
- Track booked appointments before and after. That is your ROI, in writing.
Pricing: most run a few hundred to roughly $2,000 a month depending on call volume and seats. Best for: any store missing calls after 6pm, on weekends, or during lunch. Which is every store.
📊 The Numbers
76%.
That is the share of dealership leaders who say they are increasing their AI budget in 2026, from a survey of nearly 1,200 of them by Spyne. Voice agents top the shopping list at 74%, followed by photo and inspection automation at 68% and pricing tools at 62%.
Translation: three out of four of your competitors are putting real money behind this right now. The window where AI was a differentiator is closing. By 2027 it will be table stakes, like having a website. The advantage left on the table goes to whoever moves first in their market. Standing still is now a decision, and it costs money.
🗣️ Heard on the Lot
A fixed-ops director at a 4-store group in the Southeast told me: "We turned on the AI phone agent for service overflow and stopped losing the 5:45pm callers. First full month, it booked 60-some appointments we would have flat missed. That paid for the thing four times over."
A GM at a single-point import store told me: "My closers used to hate when a customer pulled out a phone with numbers on it. Now I tell them, good, that customer is serious. We changed the whole pitch to walking them through our math out loud. Closing rate went up."
A used car manager at a Midwest group told me: "I feed every appraisal into AI to sanity-check my number against the market before I commit. Takes 20 seconds. Saved me from two upside-down trades last week alone."
❓ Ask the AI Guy
Q: "Everyone keeps telling me to 'use AI.' I run a 9-line store and I barely have time to walk the lot. Where do I actually start without blowing up my staff?"
A: Start with your phones. Not because it is trendy, because it is where you are bleeding the most money with the least effort to fix it. You do not need a strategy, a committee, or a six-figure software stack. You need to stop missing calls.
Pick one AI voice agent. Point your after-hours and overflow service line at it. That is it for month one. Do not touch sales, do not touch your CRM, do not announce a "digital transformation." Just plug the leak that is already costing you appointments every single night.
Measure one thing: appointments booked that you used to miss. If the number is real, expand. If it is not, you spent a few hundred bucks to find out. That is the whole play. AI is not a religion. It is a tool you point at your biggest leak. Phones first. Everything else later.

Reading about AI won't train your team
The stores pulling ahead aren't the ones with the most tools — they're the ones whose people know how to use them. That takes a strategy, a readiness baseline, and real training.
