A Mercedes-Benz dealership's service director is using AI damage-detection software to replace three staffers whose entire job was walking the service lane with iPads photographing cars in and out. Using AI in customer communications has dramatically boosted repair order turn time, the service director said, among other benefits. Cerqueira currently has three people in the service lane "walking around with iPads, taking photos of customers' cars on the inbound and loaner cars on the outbound," he said, and using the damage detection software will eliminate that need.

💡 Tool Spotlight

Reynolds & Reynolds' Relo — a parts-delivery robot for the service department.

What it does: Reynolds & Reynolds has expanded into robotics with Relo, a parts delivery robot designed to move components directly from the parts department to service technicians, replacing the traditional process of technicians leaving their bays to retrieve parts or relying on parts runners, which interrupts workflow and reduces productivity.

Price: Not publicly listed — verify at reyrey.com before you buy.

Who it's for: Higher-volume fixed-ops operations currently burning tech hours or a dedicated headcount on parts-runner duty — multi-bay stores where a few minutes saved per pull adds up across dozens of ROs a day.

Who it's NOT for: A single-point store with two techs and a parts counter twenty feet away. You don't need a robot to solve a problem your floor plan already solved.

📊 Stat of the Day

82% of dealers are already using AI in some form. Source: Cox Automotive's AI in Auto Retail Tracker, cited Aug. 14, 2026. The study found that 82% of dealers are already using AI, most commonly for customer follow-up, content generation and task automation.

Plain terms: eight out of ten rooftops have some AI running in the building right now. That doesn't mean eight out of ten GMs can tell you what it's actually doing to their gross. Adoption isn't the hard part anymore — measurement is.

🔮 Trend Watch

The pattern across today's stories is a widening split between AI that quietly fixes an operational bottleneck — turn time, parts runs, service routing — and AI that's still mostly a press release with a coupon code attached. The Casa Auto Group data point about oil-change pricing transparency and the Mercedes-Benz service-lane story point at the same uncomfortable truth: AI is now reading your dealership's public-facing gaps (a missing price, a manual photo walk-around) faster than your own team is closing them. Meanwhile the BDC-is-dying and AI-to-AI-transaction stories are still speculative, five-years-out framing — real conversations to have, but not line items to budget against this quarter. Fix what AI can already see about your store before you chase what it might someday do.

Reading about AI won't train your team

The stores pulling ahead aren't the ones with the most tools — they're the ones whose people know how to use them. That takes a strategy, a readiness baseline, and real training.
